Inspired by The Black Rabbit of Inlé from Watership Down, Richard Adams' epic rabbit adventure novel. The Black Rabbit is introduced as part of lapine mythology, as the creature who takes the souls of rabbits to the land of the dead.

I experimented with various stains and paints before landing on a rather beautiful natural process which just requires a bit of kitchen chemistry: the rabbits are treated with alternating washes of black tea preparation and homebrewed ferric acetate until ebonisation occurs when the iron reacts with the tannins in the wood (enhanced by the black tea). Once the wood has darkened to a hue befitting an emissary of the lapine underworld, the rabbit is massaged with danish oil to add a subtle sheen and seal the wood, preparing your new companion for the adventures you'll share together. It's far more fiddly than using shop bought wood stain and the process takes about 10 days but well worth it for the shadowy finish and the poetry of the process.

These rabbits are cut from birchwood by a laser studio down the road from me in Camberwell. Rabbits are displayed on a 40cm cable chain. If you like your necklaces to hang a bit longer or shorter, let me know your preferred length in the checkout notes.
